Writer and presenter Chuck Lanigan will explore the ways literature and popular culture color and reflect our perceptions of technology. His presentation includes readings of fiction by authors such as H.G. Wells, Huxley, E.M. Forster, Ray Bradbury and Philip K Dick, along with discussion of examples from non-fiction literature, film, television, advertising and the popular press.Chuck Lanigan is director of events and outreach for Advanced Labor & Cultural Studies. He holds a degree in history and an M.A. in Educational Communication. A reviewer described him as having an “eye for hard-chiseled observation, who has made it his business to tackle weighty issues”. He has taught at Osher Lifelong Learning, Carnegie Mellon University and the Carnegie Library’s People’s University, and written for the Pittsburgh City Paper and Western Pennsylvania History Magazine. He has partnered in Pittsburgh with Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theater and Arcade Comedy Theater. He is currently doing an oral history on people’s perceptions and experiences with technology.
